ABSTRACT A method of validating a credit card includes the steps of issuing a credit cardto a holder, the card having an account number on it. The holder is issued with a personal identification number (PIN). Before a transaction involving the credit card can be authorised, a validation transaction must be carried out in which the credit card is inserted into an electronic terminal and the PIN code is entered. The PIN code and the account number are compared with information stored in a database, and only if the PIN code corresponds correctly to the account number is use of the credit card authorised. The method prevents credit cards being used for transactions involving amounts greater than an unauthorised transaction limit applying to the card in question.

Méthode pour la validation d'une carte de crédit comprenant les étapes pour l'émission d'une carte de crédit, munie d'un numéro de compte, à un adhérent. L'adhérent reçoit un numéro d'identification personnel (NIP). Avant de pouvoir autoriser une transaction impliquant une carte de crédit, on doit procéder à une transaction de validation consistant à insérer la carte de crédit dans un terminal électronique et à entrer le code NIP. On compare le code NIP et le numéro de compte avec les renseignements mis en mémoire dans une banque de données, et on autorisera l'emploi de la carte de crédit seulement si le code NIP correspond exactement au numéro de compte. Cette méthode empêche l'utilisation de cartes de crédit pour des transactions comprenant des montants supérieurs à une limite de transaction non autorisée dans le cas d'une carte déterminée.
