ABSTRACT In the thermal cracking of heavy petroleum oil (having an API specific gravity of not more than 25) in a tubular furnace, it has been found that the formation of coke within the furnace tubes can be greatly reduced by applying a magnetic field transverse to the direction of flow of oil through the tubes. Further reductions in coking can be obtained by simultaneously applying a direct-current voltage parallel to the flow of oil through the furnace tubes.
