ABSTRACT The discoloration in aqueous slurries or solutions of alkaline products containing nickel- contaminated caustic and available chlorine is prevented by adding to the granular or powdered alkaline composition prior to the addition of water an organic chelating agent which is sodium gluconate, sodium glucoheptonate, sodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate or a mixture thereof. Other readily available chelating agents and sequestrants have been found ineffective for this application.
