This is a patent application for a new process that allows for retail electricity customers (households and commercial users with peak loads under 500 kilowatts) to consume electricity in response to electricity price signals. This process utilizes appliances and electrical equipment with currently-available pervasive computing technology and Internet-based computer applications to facilitate price-based electricity consumption. The other enabling factor for this application is the emergence of de- regulated electricity markets at the wholesale or retail level that provide time-sensitive prices. This process benefits electricity consumers wishing to take advantage of competitive price signals while at the same time providing transmission loading relief to local distribution systems and high-voltage transmission grids by creating financial incentives to reduce electricity consumption during peak load periods.
