NEC 36654 ABSTRACT Prilling Process Explosive grade ammonium nitrate prill is produced by a prilling process wherein aqueous ammonium nitrate liquid comprising between 92 to 96% w/w ammonium nitrate is caused to flow through uniformly sized orifices in a spray plate thereby forming liquid jets and, as the liquid flows through the orifices, the plate is vibrated in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of flow of the liquid jets thereby producing an asymmetric disturbance to the surface of the liquid jets and the frequency of the vibration is at or within 10% (preferably within 5%) of the optimum frequency as given by the expression fop? = uj.(.pi..205.dj(1 + 3z))-1 ...(2) wherein fOPT is the frequency in Hertz, uj is the velocity of the jet from the orifice (m.s-1), dj is the diameter of the orifice (m), z is the dimensionless group (Wej)0.5, (Rej)- 1, Wej is d;u;2p.y-1, Re; is d;u;p.g-1, p is the density of the liquid (kg.m-3), y is the surface tension of the liquid (N.m-1) and g is the viscosity of the llquid (Ns.m-2). 36654.ABS
