ABSTRACT THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing an article suitable for use as a primary backing for carpets having tufted pile loops which comprises forming on a woven, nonwoven, or knitted thermoplastic substrate capable of being tufted, a web comprising about 5% to 100% by weight of a first fiber component and about 95% to 0.0% by weight of a second fiber component, wherein said first fiber component is heat fusible with said substrate and has a denier of at least about 1.2 dtex and a fiber length of at least about 5 millimeters, and wherein said second fiber component is not heat fusible with said substrate and has a denier of at least about 1.2 dtex and has a fiber length of at least about 5 millimeters, and applying sufficient heat and pressure to form a stable bond between fibers of said web, as well as between said web and said substrate.
