ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE. To permit matching of the surface characteristics of an anilox roller (7) or of an ink application roller (6), or of rollers in a damper system (8), to printing requirements, the rollers are formed of a roller body over which a jacket or sleeve (34) is placed having the desired surface characteristics, for example a raster or screen pattern, cells or the like, for receiving and applying ink and/or damping fluid, respectively. The sleeve (34) is selectively replaceable and can be positioned over the roller. To permit such positioning without removing the roller from the printing machine, the printing machine is formed with an opening (31, 30) in one (1) of the side walls of sufficient size to permit passage of the sleeve therethrough, removal of a sleeve from the roller, and replacement by another sleeve on the roller. An auxiliary support system (35-43) supports the roller, in cantilever position, when the bearing from the first side wall (1) is removed, the auxiliary support system, preferably, including an eccentric shaft with a V-groove formed centrally therein, which can be brought into and out of engagement with an extension of one of the stub shafts of the roller.
