ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a process for manufacturing materials in the form of sheets, foils or strips, comprising chemically, mechanically and/or electrochemically roughening and anodically oxidizing aluminum or an alloy thereof, and treating the processed aluminum to provide an improved support material. In the treating step, an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution which additionally comprises at least one aliphatic monobasic, dibasic or tribasic hydroxycarboxylic acid, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or one of the water-soluble salts thereof, is interacted with the aluminum oxide by means of an immersion treatment or an electrochemical treatment. The resulting supports are particularly used in offset-printing plates.
