A printing screen, a process of making such a printing screen, and a method of screen printing on hard nonabsorbent materials, such as glass (104), are provided to form a pattern with selected areas of variable thickness. A pattern is formed in the screen (128) utilizing an emulsion coating (130) which has been hardened in the usual manner. A second pattern is formed in a second emulsion coating (124) on a surface of the screen (128) in at least one area (134) of the first pattern. The second emulsion coating (124) is substantially thinner than the first coat (130) and includes a specific dot size and arrangement to achieve additional support, which results in a thinner layer of ceramic ink (148) being deposited when the screen (128) is in use.
