A networked system having a plurality of workstations and a peripheral device, the peripheral device having a printing function, memory for storing a plurality of private print-ready jobs and input means for manually inputting information into the peripheral device. The peripheral device is also capable of accepting a private print job together with a PIN from a given workstation, placing the private print job into a queue of print jobs, converting the private print job into a private print-ready job, storing the private print-ready job in memory, and notifying the given workstation when the private job is print-ready. At any time thereafter, the peripheral device may accept a manually input PIN from a user physically present at the peripheral device, compare the PIN accepted from the given workstation with the PIN accepted from the physically present user and, if the PIN accepted from the given workstation corresponds to the PIN accepted from the physically present user, it selects the private print-ready job as the next job to be printed, and prints the print-ready job.

Un système en réseau comportant un grand nombre de postes de travail ainsi qu'un périphérique, ce dernier disposant d'une fonction d'impression, d'une mémoire permettant de stocker un grand nombre de travaux privés prêts pour impression et d'un dispositif servant à entrer manuellement des informations dans le périphérique. Le périphérique peut également accepter un travail d'impression privé accompagné d'un NIP depuis une station de travail déterminée, le placer dans une file d'attente des travaux d'impression, convertir le travail privé d'impression en un travail privé prêt pour impression, stocker ce travail en mémoire et informer la station de travail spécifique lorsque le travail privé est prêt à être imprimé. Par la suite, le périphérique peut en tout temps accepter un NIP entré manuellement par un utilisateur présent physiquement au périphérique, comparer le NIP reçu de la station de travail spécifique avec le NIP reçu de l'utilisateur physiquement présent au périphérique et, s'il y a concordance entre les deux numéros d'identification personnels, sélectionner le travail privé prêt pour impression comme travail d'impression suivant, puis imprimer le travail.
