A defined probiotic or composition of anaerobic bacteria effective for controlling or inhibiting Salmonella colonization of fowl. The probiotic includes populations or cultures of 29 substantially biologically pure bacteria. In use, the probiotic is administered to the subject fowl in an amount effective for increasing resistance to Salmonella colonization thereof. The invention also relates to a novel method for isolating probiotics which are effective for controlling or inhibiting Salmonella colonization of domestic animals, from fecal droppings, cecal contents or large intestines of the adult animals. The droppings, cecal contents or large intestine are combined with a culture medium and incubated without dilution (i e. batch culture) under anaerobic conditions. Following this preliminary incubation, the resultant culture is subjected to continuous flow conditions until a steady state is achieved, after which time the steady state culture may be recovered for use as a probiotic.

L'invention concerne un probiotique défini ou une composition de bactéries anaérobies efficaces dans l'élimination ou l'inhibition de la colonisation de la volaille par Salmonella. Le probiotique comprend des populations ou cultures de 29 bactéries pratiquement biologiquement pures. Lors de son utilisation, le probiotique est administré à ladite volaille dans une quantité efficace afin d'accroître sa résistance à la colonisation par Salmonella. L'invention se rapporte également à un nouveau procédé consistant à isoler des probiotiques qui sont efficaces dans l'élimination ou l'inhibition de la colonisation par des animaux domestiques, à partir des excréments, du contenu du caecum ou du gros intestin des animaux adultes. Les excréments, le contenu du caecum ou du gros intestin sont combinés à un milieu de culture et incubés sans dilution (c-à-d culture par lots) dans des conditions anaérobies. Après cette incubation préliminaire, la culture obtenue est soumise à des conditions d'écoulement continu jusqu'à obtention d'une culture à l'état stable, après quoi la culture à l'état stable peut être récupérée pour être utilisée comme un probiotique.
