The present invention relates to a procedure for checking the straightness of elevator guide rails and straightening deflections of the rails, and an apparatus for implementing the procedure and to a measuring apparatus. The elevator guide rails are inspected by means of a measuring device movable along the rail, said device comprising two guides placed successively along the guide rail and leaning against the rail as their stop face, by measuring the distance of the guide rail between the guides by means of the measuring device. The deflections detected are straightened and the straightened areas are checked by means of the measuring device.
