This invention concerns a process for changing a coating material, particularly paint, in a feed line leading from a colour changer to a spray nozzle, as well as an apparatus for painting, that is also connected to a flushing agent line and/or a compressed air line. The essence of the invention is that a very rigid part in the feed line is introduced as a separator between the coating material and a gaseous and/or liquid propellant that impels it under pressure and is removed from the feed line again before reaching the spray nozzle.
