ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process and device to produce billets with a smooth and clean surface by continuous casting. A chill equipped with a super- structure is employed. Air, nitrogen, or inert gas introduced at the junction of the chill and the superstructure. Separating and/or lubricating agents have been added to the gas prior to its introduction. The running surface of the chill is kept absolutely smooth, and the incoming metal prevented from contact with the chill wall, by creating in a gap between the chill and the starter block, A vacuum which is due to the suction effected by the coolant streaming out at the exit of the chill.
