A method and apparatus are described for the reproducible representation of a surgical procedure. The position or path of movement of the surgical instrument during the operation on concealed parts of the body is represented in order to document the course and results of a surgical procedure and then stored for subsequent examination. This is achieved in that a stratified image that has at least three measurement points on the patient is stored in a computer and reproduced on a display. In addition, the position of the three measurement points and the position of the surgical instrument can be determined before and during the procedure through a coordinate measurement system, superimposed with the stratified image on the display, and stored in a memory unit. The method and the apparatus (coordinate-measurement system) are well- suited for reproducing and documenting surgical procedures.
