ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method of exploiting peat, and particularly to a method wherein the peat can be exploited without any separate drying step. In the method, fresh peat is placed in conditions in which the decomposition taking place as a result of microbial activity and/or chemical reactions may start and/or go on. Heat generated as a result of decompo- sition and/or react-on products is/are transported to the point of use, and the used peat is later replaced with fresh peat and, if desired, utilized as growth substrate, soil improv- ing matter, fertilizer, fuel, or equivalent.
