Procedure for calibrating a jitter generator, wherein the linearity can be traced back to national standards over the ranges of the jitter amplitudes generated by the fitter generator, in which a ramp modulation signal (Sm) is routed to the jitter generator as a function of time, and the error of the fitter generator is determined as a function of the rise in the modulation signal from the frequency shift between the unmodulated output signal and output signal phase-modulated by the jitter generator. The device for executing the procedure encompasses a function generator for generating a modulation signal, whose output is connected with the input of a jitter generator, and a frequency meter connected with the output of the jitter generator for frequency shift display and comparison. The invention is a simple calibration method for tracing jitter back to national standards, wherein the principle-related problems and disadvantages to previously known procedures relative to outlay, flexibility in measuring point selection and traceability are avoided. The invention also eliminates restrictions in the generation of higher jitter amplitudes.
