ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A procedure and an apparatus for producing an image based on contract discrimination in an image forming apparatus with one-dimensional or multi-dimensional image field employable in small format image forming applications, have image signals obtained from each image forming points producing an electric current in a respective image forming channel, this current exerting an influence on the current passing from a tapping point of the image forming channel to said channel, and on the voltage produced at the tapping point, in such a way that their product is proportional to the image signal current, and the output of image forming is a frequency which is proportional to the current, a desired contrast heightening being achieved by supplying externally a suitable current to an interaction network connecting the tapping points of one or more image forming channels by suitably selected impedances, and the frequencies obtained from each image forming channel constituting the starting point for the image forming cycle.
