21 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Refiner mechanical pulp, in the form of RMP or TMP, of improved properties suitable for substitution for chemical pulp, especially in newsprint furnish, is obtained in a sub- stantially pollutant-free process by subjecting the pulp, between the stages of refining, to chemical treatment using sodium sulphite solution to result in increased wet stretch and stress-strain properties while retaining high drainage and avoiding substantial yield loss. Strength properties of dried paper are enhanced and energy requirements to obtain improved pulp quality in the second stage of refining are less.
