21 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Mechanical pulps in the form of RMP or, more pre- ferred, TMP, of improved properties suitable for substitu- tion for chemical pulp, especially in newsprint furnish, is obtained in a substantially pollution-free process by subjecting the mechanical pulp to chemical treatment using sodium sulphite solution. This treatment results in increased wet stretch and stress-strain properties while retaining high drainage and avoiding substantial yield loss.
