ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE In a method of preventing hydrocarbon emissions from high vapour pressure liquid hydrocarbons stored in rock cisterns, the rock cistern is kept completely closed during emptying and filling operations. When the cistern is emptied, the pressure in the gas space is elevated by heating. The surface layer of the liquid in the cistern is heated, and heated hydrocarbons are conducted into the cistern. When the cistern is emptied, part of the liquid flow is directed to a heat exchanger, which is heated, and then returned to the cistern. From the surface layer of the liquid in the cistern, a liquid flow is pumped to the heat exchanger, where it is heated, and returned to the gas space of the cistern.
