Reconditioning standardized bung-type drums that are of plastic, that are manufactured in one piece by blow moulding or which consist of a blow-moulded body with an injection moulded head that is welded on, for renewed use as bung-type drums or use as wide-neck drums, when the reconditioned bung and wide-neck drums are of an identical nominal volume and an identical height and diameter according to DIN standards is carried out by first effecting mechanical separation of the head transversely to the longitudinal axis of the body. In the case of bung-type drums with a head that is welded on, the separating cut is made beneath the welded seam. There follows preparation of the annular cut edge of the body to produce a smooth weld surface and cleaning of the drum body. The cut edge of the drum body is then calibrated followed by welding on of a head that incorporates a filler and removal bung and a ventilation and air-removal bung on the calibrated cut edge of the body to produce bung-type drums, smoothing of the welded seam, and an integrity check of the bung-type drum. There is then welding on a neck ring having a rim that extends radially outwards at the lower edge, the diameter of which is smaller than the diameter of the drum body, on the calibrated cut edge of the drum body to produce wide neck-drums. The welded seam between the drum body and the neck ring is smoothed and an integrity check made of the body and attachment of a wide-neck drum cover or a bung-type cover with a cover flange on the lower edge of the cover, on which the body neck ring is welded, with a clamping ring. The reconditioned bung-type and wide-neck drums are of an identical nominal volume and are of identical height and diameter according to DIN standards.
