ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Separation of lignin and phenol from phenol solutions which are obtained from phenol digestion of lignocellulose- containing materials, The organic phase containing lignin and phenol is extracted with water or an aqueous solution at elevated temperature, whereby a phenol-containing aqueous phase and a lignin-containing organic phase are obtained. The temperature of the aqueous phase is lowered, whereby a low water-content phenol phase and a low lignin-content aqueous phase are obtained, the latter returned at elevated temperature to the extraction that is being carried out. The phenol phase is utilized towards preparing fresh digesting solution. The lignin is precipated with water from the lignin-containing organic phase.
