ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the pre- paration of an N-sulphoalkane-aminoalkane-phosphonic acid having the general formula Image wherein R1 is H, CH3, C2H5, C6H5, C6H11, CH2NH2, C2H4OH, CnH2nCOOH or C2H4PO3H2, R2 is H or PO3H2, R3=CnH2nSO3H or CH2PO3H2, where n is from 1-11 and R4=H (when R3 is other than CH2PO3H2) or CnH2nSO3H where n is 1-11 which comprises heating an aminophosphonic acid of the general formula Image in which R1=H, CH3, C2H5, CH2NH2, C2H4PO3H2, or C6H5, R2=5 or PO3H2 and R3=H or CH2PO3H2, in an alkaline medium, with an internal ester (soltone) of a hydroxyalkane-sulphonic acid of the formula Image where n is an integer from 1 to 11 in a molar ratio of from 1:1 to 1:2.
