(57) ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a procedure for the production of mechanical pulp from a fibrous product. To reduce the refining energy, the fibrous product is subjected to an enzyme treatment in which an enzyme acts on the hemicellulose and/or cellu- lose in the fibrous product. When hydro- lytic enzymes are used, it is preferable to use oxidation-reduction chemicals to adjust the redox potential to the optimum level characteristic of each hydrolytic enzyme. In addition to reducing the refining energy consumption, the en- zyme treatment also improves the strength properties and the blue reflectance fac- tor of the pulp.
