ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A vacuum unit, for use with a suction mat or plate for treating newly placed concrete, comprises a liquid ring pump with two inlets, a first connected to a vacuum reservior and the second to a water storage container. The pump outlet discharges into the storage container. The first inlet is connected to a pipe extending upwardly through the vacuum reservior and is fitted with a strainer at the upper end. In use, water drawn from the concrete through the mat or plate passes through the vacuum reservior to the first pump inlet, and into the storage container. Sealing water for the pump is drawn from the storage container through the second inlet, and excess water flows out from the storage container through a weir overflow.
