ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a process for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a free radical-forming initiator, a conventional protective colloid, an emulsifier, a polymerization auxiliary or a mixture thereof, and in a reactor the surfaces of which contact the reaction components; the improvement comprising providing the reactor surfaces with a coating which suppresses polymer deposition on the reactor surfaces, the coating comprising a compound of general formula: R1-X-CH2-CH(OH)-Y (I) or a cross-linking reaction product thereof, wherein R1, X and Y are as defined in the disclosure and claims.
