A B S T R A C T A process for batch production of sponge metal, comprising a charging step, during which an oxide material of the metal is arranged as a stationary bed in a furnace chamber, at least one heating step, during which a hot, preferably non-reducing atmosphere is caused to flow through said stationary bed for heating the same, at least one reduction step, during which hot reducing atmosphere is caused to flow through said stationary bed of oxidic material for reducing the same to sponge metal, and when necessary a cooling step, during which cold non-oxidizing atmosphere is caused to flow through said stationary bed for cooling the sponge metal formed, characteriz- ed by heat exchanging during the heating step and the reduction step the relatively hot used atmosphere, which has just passed through the stationary bed, at least substantially in counter-current with relatively cold fresh atmosphere in order to at least preheat the cold atmosphere before introducing it into the furnace chamber directly after the heat exchange, and by conduct- ing during the possible cooling step ingoing cold fresh atmosphere and out- going relatively hot used atmosphere in a non???at-exchanging relationship to each other.
