The present invention provides a process for the oxidative bleaching of wood pulps and for deinking waste paper by means of hydrogen peroxide and a stabilising agent, wherein, as stabilising agent, there is used 2-oxo-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-acethydroximic acid chloride (N,4-dihydroxy-.alpha.-oxophenylethanimidoyl chloride) of the formula:- Image The present invention also provides an agent for stabilising hydrogen peroxide-containing bleaching and deinking solutions for waste paper, wherein it contains 2-oxo-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-acethydroximic acid chloride (N,4-dihydroxy-.alpha.-phenylethanimidoyl chloride).
