A B S T R A C T Process for controlling the swelling of clays of the bentonite type in the presence of sea-water in the preparation of drilling fluids, wherein there are carried out successively: - in a first or predilution step, the prepa- ration of a concentrated mixture or premixture, or premix, based on bentonite and soft water and, - in a second step, the dilution, up to the desired concentration, of the premix with salt water, particularly sea-water, it being understood that an effective amount of at least one of the active compounds of the group comprising: . cyanamide, dicyandiamide, hexamethylenetetramine, guanidine and aminoguanidine, . compounds corresponding to the formulae: NH3-n[(CH2)m-OH]n (I) and NH2[(CH2)m-NH]n(CH2)m-NH2 (II)
