The present invention relates to a process for the aerobic decomposition of organic components in two phases, fermentation that lasts from two to twenty days taking place in the first phase in one or a plurality of closed containers to which air is introduced or removed under regulation or under control, depending on the temperature that occurs during the fermentation; in the second phase, after the conclusion of the fermentation, the organic components so obtained are removed from the containers and subjected to after-retting. In order to minimize the retting time, provision is made such that the after-ret is essentially ventilated constantly and turned over at least once during the after-retting time.
