ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and an apparatus for the production of high molecular weight linear polycondensates, especially linear polyesters, by the further condensation of precondensates in the melt in a reactor with removal of the cleavage products by the application of vacuum, the reaction mixture being exposed to the reaction conditions in the form of a thin layer by means of a stirrer.Accordingly, molten precondensates with average degrees of condensation of at least 3 are continuously introduced at one end of the reactor, the cleavage products are removed at the particular optimum product-specific condensation temp- ratures, in a corresponding vacuum and at corresponding rotational speeds of the stirrer until the melt has a melt viscosity of from 1000 to 15,000 Poises, and this molten polycondensate is continu- ously discharged at a rate commensurate with the reaction velocity.
