ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the heat treatment of fine material is first preheated in a first zone, and subsequently heated in a second zone to the final treatment temperature by passing a flame and is then separated in a third zone from the hot exhaust gases of the second zone. Solid of liquid fuel is used for generating the heat required in the second zone and the hot exhaust gases of the second zone are used for preheat- ing the material in the first zone. The solid or liquid fuel used for generating the heat required in the second zone is first degassed or vaporised and the combustible gases formed are delivered to the second zone.
