ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The apparatus for activating carbon-containing material has an inlet for feeding carbon-containing material into a drum-shaped reactor, which is arranged so that its axis is substantially horizontal and has a cylindrical helix for moving the material about and along its axis. Heating burners are arranged outside the drum-shaped reactor and ducts are provided for introducing a stream of superheated steam inside the drum-shaped reactor. There are also discharge ports for discharging the activated carbon- containing material outside the drum-shaped reactor.
