ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A process for the rapid bleaching of pulp in which well-chlorin- ated pulp is formed into a sheet on a moving foraminous surface and subjected to washing and a rapid alkaline extraction ahead of an alkaline oxidative bleach stage such as oxi- dative extraction with oxygen, peroxide or hypochlorite. The rapid alkaline extraction step is performed on the foraminous surface and the alkaline oxidative bleach step is performed in a retention vessel with 2 to 20 minutes retention time. The pulp leaving the retention tube is sheeted on a second foraminous surface where it is subjected to washing before proceeding through further bleaching stages.
