ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Free sulfur is recovered from acid gas (H2S) streams containing large amounts of organic sulfur compounds and contaminated with ammonia and/or liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons. A conventional Claus reaction process will not operate successfully on such streams since its concepts are limited to acid gas streams with only trace amounts of gaseous hydrocarbons. A reactor housing includes a combustion section and a reaction section. A selected portion of a hydrogen sulfide stream is burned axially at the inlet to the combustion section. A second burner positioned in the annular space of the inlet around the first burner is used to burn a hydrogen sulfide stream containing ammonia. Suitable air is provided for combustion. In the reactor section provision is made to introduce remaining portion of the hydrogen sulfide stream and sulfur is recovered from the reactor.
