ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Raw petroleum coke or other carbonaceous matter containing a relatively large proportion of volatile matter is calcined in a rotary kiln in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere. The enriched atmosphere permits the oxidation of the hydro- carbon gases driven off as volatile matter during calcina- tion to supply the total endothermic heat needed for vola- tilization of the lower molecular weight components and modification of the coke structure, thus enabling operation without the use of externally supplied fuel heat. Other advantages include greater uniformity of the temperature of the calcining coke bed, reduction of air pollution through lessening of hydrocarbon and particulate emissions, a de- crease in the total volume of emissions, and improved de- sulfurization of the coke.
