Abstract of the Disclosure A process and apparatus for chemically removing ash from coal in which finely divided ash-containing coal is immersed in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid or citric acid, and acidic ammonium fluoride to cause the ash to react with the acid and the acidic ammonium fluoride, and the deashed coal is thereafter separated from the solution. Coal can be deashed by the present process with an exceedingly higher efficiency than by the conventional processes. Moreover the operation can be carried out with very high safety. The overall treating process, which can be carried out in an aqueous solution under atmospheric pressure, is practical and very economical.
