ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for developing an electrostatic latent charge image is disclosed. Adherence of toner to image-free portions on copies of different background brightness is prevented by controlling the voltage applied to the developing electrode before the image-free portions emerge from the developing zone. The voltage is controlled based on back- ground voltage measurements made by the developing electrode. An apparatus is disclosed for developing elec- trostatic latent images according to the inventive process of the invention wherein a capacitive member which stores background voltage is connected to an amplifier circuit. The circuit is connected to the developing electrode for controlling the voltage applied to it.
