An apparatus and process for dehumidifying an air stream extracted from air in a dryer and recycling the dehumidified air stream back to the dryer. Water vapour is removed from the air stream by absorption by passing the air stream through an absorption column containing a concentrated water solution of a non-volatile electrolyte solute, thereby condensing the absorbed water vapour, diluting the water solution, and transferring the latent heat of the absorbed water vapour to the diluted water solution. The air stream is reheated by contact with the water solution in the absorption column.
