ABSTRACT Process and apparatus for freezing a liquid medium Spherical frozen particles, which may be subsequently freeze dried are prepared by introducing a liquid medium in the form of droplets beneath the surface of a cooling liquid. The temperature and density of the cooling liquid is chosen so that liquid droplets freeze as they float towards the surface of the cooling liquid. Preferably a column of cooling liquid is employed and the liquid medium is introduced through an inlet near the base of the column.
