ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is directed to a method of liquefying natural gas having a pressure above its critical pressure. The gas is expanded to a pressure below its critical pressure. The expanded gas is introduced into a fractionating zone to remove the C5+ hydrocarbon in liquid form. The resultant gas stream is then compressed to a pressure above its critical pressure, cooled and then expanded to liquefy a major portion thereof. The liquefied portion is recovered and the non-liquefied portion is passed in indirect heat transfer relationship with the compressed gas stream for cooling it.
