A B S T R A C T Apparatus for making a character matrix in phototypesetting comprises a rotary cylinder, the surface of which has a number of axially spaced, circumferential grooves. The cylinder includes rings fitted on its outer surface so as to overlap the lower edge of one groove and the upper edge of the adjacent groove. A photographic film strip is fitted within each groove. The photographic film strip is pressed axially against one side of the groove. The apparatus includes means for filtering the air flowing into the cylinder when the latter rotates. The cylinder is equipped with means holding it on a rotary driving device.
