ABSTRACT The diameter of an optical fibre which is being drawn, and possible fluctuations of such diameter, are measured by making the fibre pass between two parallel plates of a capacitor and detecting its capacitance variations due to changes of dielectric constant caused by the passage of the fibre or by diameter variations of the fibre. The magnitude of the diameter or of diameter variations is derived from the capacitance variations.
