ABSTRACT Process for melting cast iron borings comprising con- tinuously charging dried borings into a coreless induction furnace operated within controlled metal levels to achieve adequate stirring of the molten metal in the furnace, drawing incoming borings beneath the meniscus of the molten metal surface, controlling the dissolved oxygen content of the molten metal to ensure formation of carbon oxide and thus achieve a "slag free" operation. The rate of feed of the borings is controlled according to the power input to maintain a predetermined constant temperature of the molten metal. Apparatus relating to the foregoing process is also disclosed.
