ABSTRACT Process and apparatus for evaporatively coating a moving foil by vapours of reactive metals produced by thermal photons. The radiation heater producing the latter is placed in a cavity or hollow body the inner wall surface of which carries the liquid evaporant that is thus exposed, together with parts of the wall surface not wetted by the liquid evaporant, to the thermal photons. The energy of the vapour is increased by the radiation heater up to about 2500°C, and also by electrons produced by the heater and attached to the vapour atoms. High energy beam-shaped vapour reduces stray deposits and condenses into dense metallic coatings.
