The invention relates to the automated planting of plantlets from a bare-root, cutting or tissue culture condition into a nursery container. The invention creates a continuous supply of v-notches (34) or open "sandwiches" or "books" of potting substrate, into which plantlets are placed, which then are closed around the plant roots or stem prior to automatic transplantation into a nursery container (46). The invention especially enables plantlets with small roots to be quickly and efficiently planted by an operator by "sandwiching" roots without injury or transplant shock. It is contemplated that this manual planting could be satisfactorily automated. The invention is useful for small plantlets or early stage germinants that have both root and shoot (such as tissue culture material derived from either micropropagation or somatic embryogenesis), but can also be used with rooted or unrooted cuttings, true or synthetic seed or naked embryos.
L'invention concerne le repiquage automatisé de plantules à racines nues, de boutures ou de plantules provenant d'une culture de tissus dans un contenant de pépinière. Elle crée un approvisionnement continu de substrat d'empotage portant une encoche en V (34) ou en forme de « sandwich » ou de « livre », dans lequel les plantules sont disposées, lequel substrat est ensuite refermé sur les racines ou la tige de la plante avant le repiquage automatique dans un contenant de pépinière (46). L'invention permet spécialement à une personne de repiquer rapidement et efficacement des plantules à petites racines en « prenant en sandwich » les racines sans les endommager ni causer de choc de transplantation. On pense que ce repiquage manuel pourrait être automatisé avec succès. L'invention est utile pour les petites plantules ou celles en début de germination qui ont à la fois des racines et des tiges (comme le matériel des cultures de tissu issu de la micropropagation ou de l'embryogénèse somatique), mais peut aussi être utilisée avec des boutures avec ou sans racines, des semences véritables ou synthétiques ou des embryons nus.
