PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A NONWOVEN FABRIC HAVING THE APPEARANCE OF APERTURED, RIBBED TERRY CLOTH ABSTRACT A process for producing a nonwoven fabric having the appearance of apertured, ribbed terry cloth. The process comprises supporting a layer of fibrous starting material whose individual fibers are in mechanical engage- ment with one another but which are capable of movement under applied liquid forces, on a liquid pervious support member adapted to move in a predetermined direction and on which fiber movement in directions both in and at an angle to the plane of the layer is permitted in response to the applied liquid forces. The support member has alternating liquid impervious deflecting zones and liquid pervious entangling zones extending transversely to the predetermined direction. The entangling zones are substan- tially free of raised deflecting means, and the deflecting zones include spaced deflecting means adapted to deflect liquid in a direction transverse to the predetermined direction. The supported layer is moved in the predeter- mined direction through a fiber rearranging zone within which streams of high pressure, fine essentially columnar jets of liquid are projected directly onto the layer. The streams of liquid are passed through the layer and the sup- port member in the fiber rearranging zone to effect movement of fibers such that spaced bundles of straight, substantially parallel fiber segments are formed in the deflecting zones, the bundles being oriented generally in the predetermined direction. Also, spaced, parallel ribs are formed in the entangling zones, the ribs extending in a direction transverse to the predetermined direction, and the ribs comprise entangled fibers that are substantially wholly entangled throughout the ribs. The spaced bundles interconnect the ribs and are locked into the ribs at the ends of the bundles by fiber entangle- ment.
