ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus and process are provided for forming a corrosion resistant, heat-insulating composition adapted to be employed in embedding pipes for conveying a hot flowable medium. The embedding composition compris- es hot bitumen in which there is rapidly admixed while said bitumen is at a temperatures of about 180°-220°C, cork of different densities in an amount so as to comprise less than 20% by weight, and preferably 8-15% by weight of the resulting composition. The resulting mixture may be employed to form blocks in a place of manufacture with pipes to be protected disposed inside a mold into which the mixture is poured in a fluid state, whereafter the pipe- containing blocks or forms may conveyed to a site of use. Alternatively, the mixture in the molten state may be poured about a pipe lying in its intenden place of use in a ditch or similar excavation.
