ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process and apparatus for producing larger diameter, high aspect ratio, calcium sulfate microfibers are provided. The process involves passing a steam heated dilute aqueous slurry, containing about 1/2% - 15%. gypsum by weight, under pressure, first through a plug flow stage wherein slender, needle-like crystals are formed, and then through a stirred-flow stage wherein the crystals are grown both axially and radially. The implementing apparatus includes means for mixing the slurry with steam to rapidly raise the slurry temperature, and a plug-flow pipe reactor connected to a continuous stirred tank reactor.
